Mayor's race fueled jokes at Southie breakfast

If the mayor's race was based on the caliber of jokes last Sunday at the St. Patrick's Day breakfast, City Councillor At-Large Sam Yoon might have scored an upset. That's according to an informal survey of participants of the annual Irish-themed roast of Massachusetts politics and politicians.

Yoon, making his first speaking appearance at the breakfast, veered between plays on his name and the mystery of what a fortune cookie supposedly foretelling the next mayor of Boston said.  Read more

Yoon launches bid, calls Menino's style 'outmoded'

As about 200 supporters chowed down on Singapore rice noodles and boneless spare ribs, City Councillor At-Large Sam Yoon formally kicked off his mayoral run Tuesday night.

In his speech to supporters, Yoon made little mention of the 15-year incumbent, Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, instead charging that the power in city politics has been concentrated in the hands of the "chosen few." He pledged to "change Boston politics forever."  Read more

Sam Yoon makes it official

Calls for an elected school committee, and notes that Boston's three favorite pastimes are sports, politics and revenge.

Stats report takes heat from Menino rivals

Mayor Tom Menino made some of the city's performance statistics public last week with a new website, but his election-year challengers are already giving the report card a failing grade.

"It reminds me of the old Soviet Union five-year plans," said candidate Kevin McCrea, a South End businessman. "It's amazing how they always hit their target every single year until they collapsed. This isn't what an accountant would say is real financial performance data that could be evaluated in an objective manner."  Read more

For McCrea, campaign begins on St. Mark's Road

He's fought City Hall in the court of law. Now he plans to fight it in the court of public opinion.

Before a small gathering of 30 supporters, businessman Kevin McCrea last week officially kicked off his campaign to unseat Mayor Thomas Menino. McCrea is also locked in a legal battle with the City Council, accusing the panel of breaking the Open Meeting law and gathering in secret.  Read more

Flaherty tells supporters: It's a 'go'

City Councillor At-Large Michael Flaherty this week officially announced his intention to topple Mayor Thomas Menino.

In a video posted on the popular website YouTube and a letter sent to supporters, Flaherty called for change in the mayor's office.  Read more

Flaherty gearing up for the run

For those with any lingering doubts about Councillor Michael Flaherty's intentions this election season, it is now clear he will be vying for the Mayor's chair.

It's simply a matter of when he will announce it.

The massive size of Flaherty's current campaign war chest - now topping off at over $590,000 - has been well documented, but the councillor is now actively preparing his ground operation. Sunday before last, he held a series of meetings with trusted lieutenants from past campaigns and newcomers from around the city on his home turf, the Cornerstone Pub in South Boston.  Read more

Kevin McCrea set to announce Mayor run

Kevin McCrea, a self-described goo-goo (good governance advocate) who successfully sued City Council for violating the Open Meeting Law, is scheduled to announce his candidacy for mayor tonight at a private home on St. Mark's Road.

"I'm running to end the waste, fraud and abuse at city hall that's preventing us from having safe streets to walk on, designing an exemplary school system for all our children, and not wasting our tax dollars," said McCrea in a phone interview Tuesday.  Read more

Yoon, posturing towards mayoral run, adds to coffers

The Boston Globe delivered a handsome gift for at-Large Councillor Sam Yoon on Christmas Eve, even if unintended.

On that day the paper ran a story that led with details about a fundraising appeal sent by Yoon's wife Christina that made mention of a "higher office" and went into a horse-race tally of Mayor Thomas Menino's, Councillor Michael Flaherty's and Yoon's bank accounts. Former Councillor Larry DiCara was quoted as saying, "Yoon has to have a six-figure number, or else he shouldn't be playing the game."  Read more
