UMass-Boston seeks to buy Bayside Expo; Motley says no plans for dorms

Wednesday, Dec 16- 5:00 p.m.- The University of Massachusetts-Boston is moving to purchase the Bayside Exposition Center on Columbia Point.

"We have signed a letter of intent to purchase the Bayside Property from L&R/CMAT," UMass-Boston Chancellor J. Keith Motley said Wednesday morning, Dec. 16 in an interview. Asked if the Bayside property would be used as a site to construct student dormitories, Motley said, "We have no plans to build other student housing. Our plans call for 2000 units of housing on campus, next to the Peninsula building."  Read more

Point plan gains mayor’s attention

Responding to residents of Savin Hill concerned about a draft development plan for the Columbia Point neighborhood, Mayor Thomas M. Menino stressed this week that the plan – and the height of the proposed buildings – was “not solidified.” Briefly addressing a gathering of small business owners while at a Dorchester Board of Trade luncheon on Tuesday, the mayor said, “I’ve heard it loud and clear.”  Read more

BRA, task force hear concerns on Columbia Pt. plan

A hearing on Saturday about a draft plan to redevelop and transform the Columbia Point peninsula drew some 65 residents, many of them from next-door Savin Hill, to the Harbor Point community center, where they expressed worries that the proposal would change the character of the ever-evolving neighborhood.  Read more

Tutor For Project D.E.E.P. This Year!

Project D.E.E.P. (Dorchester Educational Enrichment Program) is seeking a few good tutors from the local community.

The commitment is one ninety (90) minute time period per week to work with one child. This period can be anytime from 3:00 - 8:00pm on any day Monday through Thursday.

Columbia Point plan to get an airing

A draft plan to redevelop and transform the Columbia Point peninsula is drawing concern from a number of Savin Hill residents ahead of a community meeting this Saturday morning. The proposal would increase the area’s density and raise the height of potential buildings: four stories when farthest away from the JFK-UMass MBTA station and up to 20 stories when near the station.

The plan under consideration envisions turning Columbia Point into a “24-hour-a-day neighborhood” and creating 4,300 residential units.  Read more
