Live, work or play in Dorchester? Consider volunteering there, too. Boston Partners in Education is looking for mentors and tutors for students in Boston Public Schools, specifically in Dorchester neighborhoods.

Volunteers work one-on-one or with a small group of students for an hour a week during the school day. Opportunities are available in all grades (K-12) in either English Language Arts or math.  Read more

Orchestra to perform Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” at the Strand

Boston Baroque's Orchestra will present a free concert on Sunday at the Strand Theatre.

In sync with Boston Baroque's exciting 40th Anniversary Season, the Grammy-nominated orchestra will present a free concert at the historic 1400-seat Strand Theatre, 543 Columbia Road in Dorchester on Sun., Nov. 10 at 2 p.m. The concert, sponsored and hosted by Mayor Thomas M. Menino, and the City of Boston's Office of Arts, Tourism and Special Events is also made possible by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Free For All Concert Fund.  Read more

What will the next mayor of Boston do with the Strand Theatre, the Uphams Corner landmark that debuted as a movie palace in the waning days of World War I? Like a Charlie Chaplin character flickering across its earliest screen, the Uphams Corner landmark stumbled and lurched across the 20th century and, on more than one occasion, damn-near plunged hat-first into an abyss of debt and decrepitness. Family Variety Fridays

Every Friday evening the Anthony D. Perkins Community Center hosts “Family Variety Fridays”. This is a FREE weekly Friday event open to family, friends of all ages and the community-at-large, all summer long. No membership or registration required.

Activities include but are not limited to movie nights, pool parties, carnival nights and talent shows.
