Today is Kaitlyn's birthday. She would have been 25 years old today. She should have been 25 years old today. But she didn't want to reach 25. For reasons known only to her, she couldn't make it through her 24th year.
This weekend we had a birthday remembrance Mass for Katie as well as a 12th anniversary Mass for our cousin Duane Liotti, who at the tender age of 21 took his own life in his South Boston apartment, ironically enough on Kaitlin's 13th birthday. An effort to start up a new civic association along the border of Mattapan and Hyde Park got off to a slow start Tuesday night when only around 15 interested residents showed for a meeting representing a neighborhood of over 1,200 homes.
Inspired by a high crime rate - including a triple non-fatal shooting at Taunton Avenue and Oak Crest Road in January - teacher Ginny Allen and others, with help from Boston Police Department's District E-18, are pulling together neighbors to address crime and other problems. An uptick in daytime burglaries has Boston Police stepping up patrols and calling this week for increased vigilance from residents.

Recently there have been letters to the editor and articles in the Dorchester Reporter telling people that we must not fear the violence in the Dorchester community and that people should go on with their lives as usual. Have we desensitized ourselves to the fact of a young black man being murdered on our streets is the norm? Read more
The Suffolk County District Attorney's office is taking heat from residents for the abrupt firing of a Dorchester man who ran the Washington Street Corridor Weed and Seed Initiative. Adam Gibbons, coordinator of the Codman Square-based program for the last year, was unexpectedly sacked on Monday. The termination has outraged members of a grassroots board that helped to hire Gibbons.
Alison Carter-Marlowe, the interim chair of the initiative's steering committee, says that she and other officers were surprised when they learned of Gibbons' dismissal. Read more
City Councillor Chuck Turner has made a move that has some of his most ardent supporters groaning. While Sen. Dianne Wilkerson was admitting to the Boston Globe that she took some $70,000 in off-the-books cash donations, and while House leader Sal DiMasi was signaling his intention to resign amidst a swarming influence-peddling investigation, Turner - accused by the FBI of extorting and accepting a $1,000 bribe - was meeting with a previously-undisclosed branch of his faithful, the Lyndon LaRouche Movement. Boston Police report finding a male, 16, shot at Gallivan Boulevard and Patterson Street around 3:30 p.m. yesterday. He was taken to Boston Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

A 21 year-old man from Tiverton Street in Dorchester has been identified as the young man found shot to death next to Wainwright Park last week. Terrence Hadily was discovered suffering from multiple gunshot wounds outside of 101 Brent Street on Monday, Dec. 22.
Police were called to the scene just after 10:30 p.m. that night. Hadily was pronounced dead at the scene.
On Monday (Dec 29), a 17 year-old Dorchester teen was found shot multiple times outside 7 Hosmer Street just before 1 a.m.. The victim, who was pronounced dead at Boston Medical Center, was later idenitifed as Jermaine Perry.

A Suffolk County grand jury last week indicted a 23 year-old man for the murder of a 19 year-old Dorchester woman last year. Daniel Harris faces first-degree murder charges and a variety of weapons charges in the shooting death of Alexandra "Xanda" Gomes last November. Gomes was standing with a group of people outside a home on Elder Street near Uphams Corner when she was shot. Three other people were injured in the shooting, which happened at about 2:20 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 9. Read more
