Vote on closing schools delayed; parents still on high alert

Superintendent Carol Johnson is delaying a vote on plans to close schools, giving parents opposed to the closures a month to regroup. Dorchester schools on the chopping block include Roger Clap Elementary and the East Zone Early Learning Center. School officials had also been pushing to merge the Lee Academy Pilot School and the Lee Elementary School.
“Overall, I’m optimistic that we have the extra month or so to get them to change their minds, and hopefully this opens up more of a debate,” said Kenny Jervis, one of the parents leading the charge to keep Clap Elementary open. “We’re happy we got the extra time but it’s nowhere near a victory yet.” Read more
Conference to help city churches make sorely needed renovations

Dorchester’s spiritual community has borne firsthand witness to the community’s history, which stretches back nearly four centuries. It was members of a church community, the First Parish Church, that founded this city within a city. After decades of service to their neighborhoods, many of Dorchester’s church buildings are daue for a much needed facelift, and their congregations are turning to the city’s historical organizations for aid. A Suffolk Superior Court jury today convicted Torrey Browne, 34, of raping a woman on his new boat at the Dorchester Yacht Club after she told him she didn't want a romantic relationship with him, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reported. Read more
Long road to market: neighbors get update on Dot Ave. project

The attorney representing the owner of 1188 Dorchester Ave. said this week the property is closer to becoming an “international” supermarket and could open by the end of the year. He defended the owner of the property, Khiet Tran, and said the cost of cleaning up the site, purchased in 2006 and found to be contaminated with chemicals, had skyrocketed to $500,000 and slowed down construction.
At a Tuesday night meeting of the Columbia Savin Hill Civic Association’s planning committee, attorney Kim Woongtae also cited bad weather and bureaucratic red tape as reasons for the construction delay. He also said that the site had been vandalized, with racially-tinged graffiti spray-painted onto some of the remaining windows. Read more

Boston's coffers ended fiscal year 2010 with a $9.1 million surplus, a fiscal watchdog group reports.
The Boston Municipal Research Bureau said Monday that the $9.1 million represents represents 0.4 percent of that fiscal year's $2.3 billion in spending.
But let's not start jumping around and compiling a list of programs to restore to full funding just yet.

The Dorchester Beach Festival planned for Saturday in Savin Hill has been cancelled, according to the Dorchester Environmental Health Coalition.
New owners of former C. F. Donovan’s plan ‘family’ establishment

C.F. Donovan's: Sold at auction today for $875,000 to owner of McKenna's Cafe.The site of the former C. F. Donovan’s restaurant was sold Thursday morning at a sidewalk auction to the owner of McKenna’s, the café across the street, and a local financial planner.
The winning bid for the former restaurant, which longtime owner Arthur Donovan lost to foreclosure, was $875,000. The property comes with a liquor license, a tax lien from the state Department of Revenue, $6,297 in back taxes and outstanding water bills and sewer charges totaling $2,731.
“We’re doing it for the neighborhood,” said Ken Osherow, president of At Home Real Estate Group, which is located next to McKenna’s café. Osherow, who is also planning to open an ice cream shop down the street, said the restaurant will have a “family” atmosphere. Read more
Neighbors patrol streets, send message in Savin Hill

A group of Savin Hill residents fed up with the prostitution and drug dealing in the area took to the streets Tuesday night in an effort to show that crime will not be tolerated in the beachside neighborhood. The effort apparently dissuaded at least one alleged drug user from hanging around. Read more
