Woman convicted in stabbing death of senior citizen

A Suffolk Superior Court jury today found Verna Sewell, 65, guilty of manslaughter for the stabbing death of the man whose apartment she had shared for several months, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Prosecutors had sought a second-degree murder conviction for Sewell, whom they charged plunged a knife into Julius Scott's chest on May 8, 2009, then left, leaving him to dial 911 himself just before he lapsed into unconsciousness and died in a pool of his own blood. Scott was 74 when he died in his 538 Talbot Ave. apartment.
