With spring finally here, it’s time to applaud some of our neighborhood student athletes, coaches and Greater Neponset’s sports organizers for their superlative efforts during their Winter seasons. Let’s start with our own Senior class, which is represented throughout all of the finest high schools in Boston.
Congratulations to the following Senior Student Athletes for their outstanding efforts for their school teams: Paul Fahey, Catholic Memorial – basketball; Kelly Sullivan, Boston Latin Academy – basketball; Jackie McDonough, Boston Latin – basketball; Kevin McCarthy, Catholic Memorial - hockey; Paul Mylette, Boston Latin – hockey; John McGrath, Boston Latin – hockey; Tom Hynes, Boston Latin Academy – hockey; and Meagan Williams, Mt. St. Joseph – hockey.
I would also like to recognize and congratulate additional varsity student athletes from the Greater Neponset neighborhood: Ryan McDonough of the B.C. High hockey team; Greg Penella, Mike and Pat Murray of the Boston Latin hockey team; Kevin Sweeney, Mark Guerard, Nick Maestro and Mike Mannion of the Boston Latin Academy hockey team; Tim Connolly, Sydney McGrath and Carissa Gouzoule of the Boston Latin Academy swim team; Ryan Fullam of the Trinity Catholic Hockey team; Sean Finn of the Catholic Memorial hockey team; Samantha Curley of the Fontbonne hockey team; Amanda McEachern of the Mt. St. Joseph hockey team and Brenna Galvin, Bridget Nee and Mary Kate Lampron of the Boston Latin Girls hockey team.
These student athletes had phenomenal winter seasons for their high school teams as we had outstanding efforts on the basketball courts, hockey rinks and in the swimming pools. Best of luck to the senior class on their college endeavors and to all of the student athletes who performed for their high schools during the winter season.
In addition to the high school student athletes mentioned above, I would like to congratulate Neponset’s own Mark Dennehy, coach of the Merrimack Men’s hockey team, who were one of the best college teams in the country this season. Merrimack College qualified for the NCAA Hockey Tournament for the first time in over twenty years and unfortunately lost a heartbreaker to Notre Dame to end its Cinderella season.
We cannot talk about college hockey in Neponset without mentioning two of the finest hockey players in the country, Jimmy and Kevin Hayes. The Hayes brothers were instrumental this season as Boston College captured the Hockey East and Beanpot Championship’s but were stonewalled by Colorado College and sent home packing in the NCAA Hockey tournament. In exciting news, it was recently announced that Jimmy Hayes signed with the Chicago Blackhawks organization, fantastic news and congratulations to Jimmy and his family. Last but not least, special shout out to Caroline English, Holy Cross Women’s Hockey, who had a fantastic season leading the Crusaders this year and to Katie King, who played basketball as a freshman for Curry College this season.
