Routine traffic stop leads to illegal weapon charges

The Boston Police Department reports arresting a man on charges he was driving around with a loaded gun after officers stopped him for doing 50 in a 30-m.p.h. zone.

Police say officers stopped the car around 1:20 a.m. Friday after clocking it doing 50 on Columbia Road near Bird Street. The driver appeared nervous, grew increasingly so and kept looking at the center console - which had a bag of green leafy material in it, police say: "The driver's behavior/mannerisms, nervous behavior, presence of marijuana and his continued staring at the center console even after officers had seized the marijuana lead officers to believe that there was further contraband in the center console."

The occupants were ordered out and an officer found a loaded gun in the center console, police say. The driver, Kirby L. Wideman, 26, of Roxbury was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition and unlawful possession of a loaded firearm.
