Walsh proposes earlier prelim election in September

Mayor Martin Walsh has asked the City Council to OK holding year’s preliminary municipal election two weeks early to observe Jewish holiday Yom Kippur, according to an order filed with the City Council on Friday.

Walsh has requested to hold this year's preliminaries on Tuesday, Sept. 8 as Yom Kippur begins at sunset on Sept. 22, the intended election day. According to the City Charter, the preliminary elections are to be held on the sixth Tuesday preceding regular elections. Another Jewish holiday falls on Tuesday, Sept. 15.

The council will take up the matter at Wednesday’s weekly meeting.
