Fire damages Welles Avenue stores

The Boston Fire Department reports a basement short circuit started a two-alarm fire on Welles Avenue early Monday that caused an estimated $300,000 in damage to a block of stores.

Firefighters responded at 1:25 a.m. to 84-88 Welles Avenue, home to a beauty salon, a barbershop and an empty storefront.

There were no injuries, the department reports.
