Bears "three-peat" as city champs, edge New Mission in thrilling fashion

That familiar postseason electric buzz is in the air yet again as the TechBoston boys’ basketball team marches on toward the MIAA Division II state finals in search of a third consecutive championship title.

The Bears added more silverware to their increasingly cramped trophy cabinet last Thursday with a 63-47 win over Latin Academy last Thursday to claim their third consecutive City Championship title.

Seniors Alan Nunez and Shamar Browder led the way for the Bears, scoring 16 and 12 points, respectively. Strong senior leadership has been a cornerstone of the program under the leadership of head coach Johnny Williams--a trend that continued last night when the Bears faced Boston City League rival New Mission in the first round of the DII South tournament.

The Titans came out the gate strong and reached halftime with a double-digit lead over the Bears, an advantage they would cling to until just under five minutes left in the fourth quarter. At that point, trailing 40-52, it seemed likely that TechBoston would see their incredible three-year run come to an end. But the Bears’ seniors responded again: Nunez with a pair of triples and Browder with a display of strong defense and unselfishness, punctuated by a layup to tie the game at 58 with 45 seconds remaining.

In the end, it was sophomore Tre Norman who played hero after driving to the hoop and drawing a foul in the dying seconds. With decibel levels high in the rowdy gym, Norman missed the first attempt before draining the second to seal the come-from-behind victory.

Next up, the Bears will take on second seeded Westwood in a quarterfinal matchup on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. With ample momentum on the heels of a clutch win, tenth-seeded TechBoston will be confident they can pull off the upset and keep their hopes for a third straight state title alive.
