Five dead from COVID-19 virus-related illness in Mass

Five Massachusetts residents have died as a result of contracting COVID-19, the Department of Public Health announced.

The state announced its second death attributable to the coronavirus-caused illness on Saturday night, but that number jumped to five in Sunday's daily report on case numbers. The number of confirmed cases increased another 121 over Saturday — the fourth straight day with the largest daily increase since the outbreak started — bringing the total to 646.

Although both Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket local officials or hospitals have each reported at least one case, the state's daily update listed only one case in Dukes and Nantucket Counties as a single, combined category. Seventy-one patients have been hospitalized as a result of the illness, 263 have not been hospitalized, and the status of the remaining 312 was not immediately clear.
