An outdoor patio at Ashmont Grill was damaged by a drunk driver Tuesday night, leaving vehicle debris, soil, and bits of concrete planter strewn across the area outside the restaurant that faces Peabody Square.

The scene, initially reported by a Twitter user, was cleaned up by workers from the Office of Neighborhood Services and Boston Public Works within hours. While the total damage is yet to be assessed, the Twitter user estimated that one of the patio tables struck was "not salvageable."

The outdoor seating area was built thanks in part to a 2017 "Revitalizing Peabody Square" crowdsourcing campaign that raised nearly $100,000. Over the past year, the outdoor seating area proved vital to the eatery as indoor dining fell prey to Covid restrictions.
