The Henderson Upper School on Croftland Avenue has a new and fully accessible schoolyard that was opened last Tuesday (June 10) at a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Mayor Wu, Council President Ruthzee Louijeune, Councillors Brian Worrell and Erin Murphy, state Rep. Brandy Fluker Reid, and dozens of students.
The project was inspired by ninth-grader Mayrah Williams, who proposed the idea in second grade as part of a school assignment. Since that time nearly a decade ago, Williams continued to advocate for the inclusive playground that was delivered last week. It features a turf field, soft rubber surfacing, and accessible play areas.
A big step in bringing the vision to reality was the awarding of a $730,000 Community Preservation Act (CPA) allotment in 2020. Williams expressed gratitude for the project’s completion during a ribbon cutting ceremony last week and emphasized the importance of inclusive spaces for all students.
