Pop Warner seeks help to protect players with new safety helmets

To the Editor:

Since its inception, the Dorchester Pop Warner Inc. has had a proud tradition of keeping safety and good health a top priority and tradition for all its players. Coaching staff of the Dorchester Eagles have noticed and studied continuous increasing incidents of football related concussions and head injuries on the football field around the country.

This unfortunate phenomena not only threatens to put our youth at serious risk for long-term health problems, but also threatens to cause reduced support within community for a sport that has been providing a multitude services for young people beyond the football field.

One of the major steps the Eagles organization has taken to address the issue is by enrolling all staff in the Safety Training Course (STC). Among other important sports information, the staff will also receive additional specialized training on proper hitting and tackling, which will then be taught to the players.
In addition to the staff training, the organization is seeking to provide all of its players with the newer hybrid 3 helmets that are specifically designed to prevent head trauma. These particular helmets have been tested and proven to prevent concussions and head injuries by as much as 85 percent.

While we have begun to organize the efforts and pool the small resources of the Dorchester Eagles for this worthwhile cause, we do realize that our efforts alone will not be enough. This is why we are asking any and all supporters to assist in the effort to provide our players with the equipment that will keep them safe and confident on the football field.

As an organization and active members of our community, we firmly believe that by ensuring that our youth have what they need to remain healthy, motivated and safe. We are sending the strongest, most positive message that we are fully invested in their collective development and future progress. So please join us in this important endeavor by offering whatever finding, support or assistance you can. We thank you in advance for your support.
