A ‘dangerously dark’ stretch - Circuit woes blamed for X-way outage

A dark stretch of the southeast expressway near Savin Hill — where a circuit problem has snuffed out a long row of street lamps— is getting some attention from state highway officials this month. The state’s Department of Transportation (DOT)— which supervises the expressway— has dispatched crews to find the source of the lighting trouble, which has become more noticeable for commuters now that sunset arrives earlier.

One motorist was so alarmed by the conditions on the state road this weekend that they logged a complaint on the city of Boston’s constituent website, CitizenConnect: “Last night, almost all street lights out on Southeast Expressway between Andrew Square and IBEW building in Dorchester. Road was dangerously dark,” the anonymous tipster advised on Monday.

It’s a problem that many have already noticed, including state highway officials.

“There is a significant amount of lighting that’s out along 93 southbound after exit 15,” said Mass DOT spokesman Mike Verseckes. “Over the past few weeks, crews have been out there actively trouble shooting the circuit problems and did restore a small section of lights south of Savin Hill. “However much more work is still going to be required,” said Verseckes, who added that a complete fix would likely take “weeks or months at this point.”

“It won’t happen overnight. We are hoping for a gradual, noticeable improvement starting soon,” Verseckes said.
