Mystery box emitting low levels of radiation found in Julian Street basement

Mystery box

A Boston Fire Department hazmat crew removed a box that a meter showed was emitting a very low amount of radiation from a Julian Street three-decker on Wednesday.

On Thursday, a federal nuclear inspector opened the box, which turned out to contain just rocks, Boston Fire Department spokesman Steve MacDonald said.

"No hazard but they were giving of some radiation but within accepted limits," he said. "We may see if a college that has a geology department might want them.

A resdient found the padlocked wooden box, festooned with warning labels, in the basement of the triple decker at 64 Julian St. around 2 p.m. He called 911.

Both fire crews and the Boston Police bomb dog responded.
