Owner of stolen phone tracks it through GPS, leads police to suspect

The Boston Police Department reports arresting a local man on charges he broke into a car after the car's owner started tracking his missing iPhone via its GPS.

Police say Ismael Diaz, 49, was one of two men who broke into a car outside 183 Howard Ave. in Dorchester sometime Wednesday morning and made off with a backpack, laptop and iPhone while the owner was picking something up at a nearby store before driving away in a Nissan.

Police say the two got less than a mile: "As officers were speaking to the victim, he told officers that he had tracked the suspect via the GPS on his phone and it now showed that the suspect was in the area of Wyola Place and Columbia Road. Officers immediately responded to the area where they observed the car unoccupied with the victim's items inside the car. Officers then spoke to a witness who reported that three males had exited the car and that they had walked away shortly before officers arrived. The witness then went on to point officers in the direction Columbia Road toward Quincy Street and directed officers to one of the suspects."

Police say they are continuing to look for the second suspect.
