Dot man guilty in ’12 cyclist death

A Dorchester man who struck and killed a cyclist on Morrissey Boulevard in 2012 was convicted of felony motor vehicle homicide last week in Suffolk Superior Court. Jurors found that Michael Ahern, 49, was drunk and negligent when he hit 63 year-old Doan Bui with his pick-up truck near Malibu beach after a night spent drinking in Boston bars. Ahern stayed with the victim and called police to the scene. Investigators say Ahern was traveling at 51 m.p.h. on Morrissey, a parkway that has a 30 m.p.h limit. Ahern faces a minimum mandatory one year in jail and will be sentenced on Oct. 31.

"Doan Bui's only crime was to ride his bicycle home from a night of fishing," said District Attorney Dan Conley after the verdict. "His death devastated his family and left them without his love, devotion, and support. This case was important to us because they are people of humble means, immigrants with no connections and no one else to speak up for them. Mr. Bui's death was a crime and the defendant had to be held accountable for it."
