Dot native makes video of an epic NHL fight for ESPN

Dorchester native Mark O’Sullivan has produced a 16-minute video entitled “Our Tough Guy” that features an episode in the hockey life of former Boston Bruin John Wensink, who was known as an “enforcer,” and premiered at the Boston Film festival on Sept 27.

The video will be featured on ESPN’s 30 for 30 series next Wednesday, Nov 12. Molly Schiot directed the film and it was co-produced by Peter Karinen and executive producer Noah Goldsmith.

“It isn’t ‘Gone with the Wind’ or anything,” said the 47-year-old O’Sullivan, “But it may lead to some bigger and better things because there are so many great stories from our neighborhood.”

The action centers around Wensink’s 1977 epic battle with Minnesota North Star Alex Prius. After emerging victorious from the on-ice scrap, Wensink challenged the entire North Star bench to fight. None took up the cause, so with some emphatic gestures Wensink skated to the penalty box to the cheers of the crowd.

“It was great to see Wensink get credit for the effect he had on the team” as an enforcer, said O’ Sullivan. “He had 20 goals one year and was on track to be an All Star but he played his part enabling guys to excel in specific positions who maybe weren’t as well rounded players, that is a real sacrifice to make for your team.”

O’Sullivan is the third-oldest child of 11 in his family, and he and his six brothers and four sisters have been involved in local sports since they were children. Two of his brothers played in the NHL and on international teams. His sister Stephaney is a founding member and current manager of the O’Sullivan Hockey Academy and is an International Ice Hockey Federation veteran.

O’Sullivan played hockey himself starting at Neponset Youth Hockey, now Dorchester Youth Hockey, and continuing at Thayer Academy and the University of Notre Dame where he played in goal.

Director Shciot was the catalyst for the video. She reached out to the O’Sullivans for help finding hockey fans that would remember Wensink. “She asked me to find some guys who played hockey growing up and anyone who had actually been to the North Stars game,” said O’Sullivan, who works as a financial planner but describes coaching as his passion.
