Port Norfolk Park plans to be laid out in meeting tonight

The Department of Conservation and Recreation will lay out construction and design plans for the long-awaited transformation from the former Shaffer Paper site into the Port Norfolk Park tonight (Thursday, Dec. 11). After securing more than $4 million in funding last year for remediation and decontamination, DCR will unveil the results of the construction bid and the final design for the park in a community meeting at 7 p.m. at the Port Norfolk Yacht Club on Walnut Street.

The final design will include “different kinds of plantings and salt mark restoration along the shore with a loop path connecting to the Neponset Greenway network,” said Ruth Helfeld, head of landscape architecture for DCR. Helfeld expects the roughly two-year construction schedule to not impact abutters and neighbors to the future park. “We’re mindful of the fact that we’re in a neighborhood and want to make sure things go as smoothly as possible for the neighbors. We don’t expect major construction impacts,” said Helfeld.
