A hero square memorializing Sgt. Daniel J. Londono, who was killed in action in Iraq in March 2004, was re-dedicated on Saturday, Aug. 30 at the corner of East Cottage and Dawes Streets, close to where the Army serviceman was born and raised. Londono’s mother and sister were on hand for the ceremony, along with the city’s Veterans Services Commissioner Francisco Urena. Sgt. Londono, 22, was killed when his vehicle struck an IED near Baghdad.

After his death, Daniel’s family was presented with the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. The Archbishop Williams High School graduate was a veteran of service in Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq. The new hero square includes a plaque that gives more detailed biographical information about Sgt. Londono, who is buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
