Alleged Baby Bella killer, mother to return to court in Nov.

The legal proceedings surrounding the murder of Bella Bond, for months known only as Baby Doe, continued in Dorchester Municipal Court on Tuesday morning. Michael McCarthy, 35, and Rachelle Bond, 40, are being charged in connection with the death of Bond’s 2-year-old daughter, Bella, who was found deceased in a bag on a Deer Island shore in June.

McCarthy is accused of killing the toddler by pummeling her repeatedly in the stomach. Bond is charged with accessory after the fact, as prosecutors allege she helped conceal the murder and dispose of her daughter’s body. They lived in an apartment on Maxwell Street in Dorchester.

Both have pleaded not guilty to all charges; Bond is held on $1 million bail and McCarthy remains held without bail. They appeared in court Tuesday for a status hearing, according to the Suffolk district attorney’s office, with the next court date set for Nov. 19.

In court, the judge ruled the defense is permitted to conduct a secondary autopsy on Bella, according to the district attorney’s office. Prosecutors did not object to the defense’s request.
