Arredondo Family Foundation will launch tonight in Back Bay

Carlos Arredondo, who helped those injured during the 2013 Boston Marathon Bombing, has established the Arredondo Family Foundation (AFF) with his wife Mélida. The foundation will launch on Monday, April 6 from 6-9 p.m. at the Back Bay Social Club, 867 Boylston St., Boston.

The launch event will include a speech from Jeff Bauman, a marathon survivor who lost both legs and who Carlos helped rescue by assisting first responders. Other marathon survivors will also attend the event.

The foundation will financially assist those affected by tragedy and educate on matters relating to military personnel, veterans, military families, and the suicide. The foundation will partner with other non-profits to maximize outreach and will include military siblings attending UMass Boston in the Arredondo Brothers Memorial Scholarship. The foundation’s 501C-3 status is pending.

Carlos’ son Alex, a Marine, was killed in 2004 while serving in Iraq. Carlos’ younger son, who struggled with overwhelming grief from his brother’s death, committed suicide in 2011. The Arredondos have since advocated for Gold Star families and families affected by suicide. They have also volunteered for the American Red Cross, the St. Francis House for the Homeless, and Massachusetts Stand Down for Veterans.

Coleman Nee, former Massachusetts Secretary of Veterans Affairs and a consultant of the Foundation, will also speak on veteran’s issues including suicide and employment.

The event will feature a silent auction with items such as a weekend in Copley Square, a hockey stick autographed by the Boston Bruins, Red Socks tickets, and a beauty session at Lord and Taylor. There will also be an introduction of the charities marathon runners, including Chris Laudani, who shoveled the marathon finish line during a blizzard this winter.
