Boston Children’s Chorus weighs move to Columbia Road building

The Boston Children’s Chorus (BCC) is weighing a possible move to Upham’s Corner as it scouts potential locations for a new home. Though the group is still in an exploratory phase and “not anywhere near making a firm decision at all,” BCC President and Artistic Director Anthony Trecek-Kingtold the Reporter that the Masonic Hall on Columbia Road is under consideration.

The program’s current building in the South End has been sold and their lease is set to expire in May 2016, Trecek-King said. They have plenty of time to consider new locations, he said. Although they have been considering a more permanent base for the past few years, the sale “forced their hand” a bit, Trecek-King said.

Upham’s Corner is familiar territory for the Children’s Chorus, which often performs at the Strand Theater. If the organization decides to move forward with the Masonic Hall, it would be transforming the second through fourth floors into a school.

As a musical program, the Chorus has specific needs for any potential new site. These include high ceilings in a number of rooms with sizable width and depth, small rooms for breakout sessions, and office and library space, according to Trecek-King.

About 50 locations have been considered so far, he said. While many have had potential, Trecek-King said the Masonic Hall is a promising location to begin connecting with the community, assessing local resources, and making sure the building meets their needs as a program. No binding arrangement is in place at this time.

“The goal is certainly to be part of the fabric of the community,” Trecek-King said. He said the program hopes to be a welcome asset to the area, rather than coming into the neighborhood without reaching out to those within it. “We need to have conversations,” he said, “and we’re in the middle of having those conversations.”
