Bridgewater State honoring Martin Richard's legacy

Bridgewater State University has memorialized the short life of Martin Richard, the seven-year-old Dorchester boy who was killed in the Boston Marathon bombings in 2013, by dedicating a key campus institution in his name.

The Martin Richard Institute for Social Justice at Bridgewater State University will seek to promote fairness and basic human rights for all persons, the university said on Wednesday, a poignant touch straight from the poster Martin held in a picture distributed world-wide after the terrorist attack on Boylston Street that cost his sister Jane a leg and badly injured his parents. It reads: “No More Hurting People ... Peace.”

The university has engaged with a local sculptor to create an appropriate statue for siting on the campus in University Park later this summer, a school spokesperson said.

Bill and Denise Richard have had a long and personal association with Bridgewater State. They met on the campus there and received their degrees together in 1993.
