Dot’s Bosworth tapped as MassDOT’s ‘strategy’ chief

Scott BosworthScott BosworthThe Massachusetts Department of Transportation added a new post and a returning face this past week, tapping Dorchester resident and long-time transportation enthusiast Scott Bosworth as Chief Strategy Officer. Bosworth fills the newly created post under Massachusetts Department of Transportation Secretary Stephanie Pollack.

As CSO, he will “drive institutional change and innovation, foster a customer-centric culture, and lead key strategic initiatives across the agency,” according to a department release. State officials said the post was created to help reform the structure of MassDOT and the MBTA.

“We can’t rest on our laurels at all,” Bosworth told the Reporter. He noted transportation had to be at the top of the state’s priority list, especially in light of the coming winter and the implementation of Gov. Charlie Baker’s $83 million MBTA winter preparedness plan.

Bosworth, a daily commuter, feels the strain when transit systems break down. He sometimes traces a path from Haymarket to Milton by Orange Line, Red Line, Mattapan Trolley, and bike.

Along with being an avid runner, Bosworth has been a cross country/track and field coach at Milton Academy for 12 years, though he is on a leave of absence from the post after accepting his new position at MassDOT. His son and daughter are graduates of Milton Academy.

He and his family have lived for about six years in the Wellesley Park neighborhood of Dorchester, their house abutting the bend in the Red Line train between Fields Corner and Shawmut.

This is Bosworth’s second time serving in a government transportation position. Gov. Bill Weld appointed him assistant secretary of the Executive Office of Transportation and Construction in 1992, where he served for five years.

Prior to that, Bosworth worked for three years as the legislative director for former Congressman Elmer Greinert “Bud” Shuster (R-PA). Shuster was known for his transportation initiatives, and Bosworth “grew within the industry and really enjoyed it.”

Bosworth founded Fort Hill Advisors in 1998, now the Fort Hill Companies, a “conglomeration of consulting firms that offer professional services to commercial development and private entities and government agencies at all levels.” In his new post, Bosworth said he will have no involvement with those companies.
