Dorchester native Sue Costello returns to Boston on the heels of a sold-out Women in Comedy show with four shows headlining Laugh Boston on June 12 and 13.

Costello, a 5’3” spitfire comedienne who grew up in Savin Hill before striking it big and moving to Hollywood said of her show at Laugh Boston, “I’m whipping people into a frenzy,” she told the Reporter. “It took that long to have the guts to be silly.”

Costello has starred in two CBS pilots and produced “Costello” on Fox, competed on “Last Comic Standing,” and more, as well as appeared in the film “The Fighter,” starring Mark Wahlberg.

“Mark Wahlberg inspires me tremendously,” she said, citing his success and pride for Dorchester. Costello told the Reporter she remembers growing up with Wahlberg, whose mother used to care for Costello’s grandmother at a nursing home on Grampian Way.

Costello said another inspiration is a fellow Savin Hill upstart: Mayor Marty Walsh.

“He gave up drinking and became the mayor of Boston. My heart swells about Marty.”

Costello will be joined by a special guest at the 10:15 p.m. Saturday show–her aunt Kathy.

After the Laugh Boston Shows, Costello heads to Nantucket’s Dreamland Theater on July 25 to perform her one-woman stage show about growing up in Dorchester I Wasn’t Trying to Be Funny that has already yielded rave reviews from the upper crust crowds.

“I did it in Nantucket and they went mental,” Costello said. “They love it. They love the truth, they love the humor. That’s why they make movies about Boston.”
