Farmer’s markets gearing up for summer season

Now synonymous with summer in the city, farmers’ markets will be making their return to Dorchester this week as four different markets celebrate their opening days. Each market in Dorchester is also participating in the Boston Bounty Bucks program, which started in 2008. In addition to all vendors accepting SNAP/EBT, Boston Bounty Bucks will match any EBT/SNAP purchases up to $10.

This Friday, the Ashmont/Peabody Square Farmers’ market will open for its seventh season at 3 p.m. on the plaza next to Ashmont Station. The launch will feature children’s activities, music and a ribbon cutting ceremony beginning at 4 p.m. The market will operate each Friday through October 16th, and accepts cash and credit cards in addition to SNAP/EBT.

Vicki Rugo, one of the neighborhood volunteers who runs the market at Ashmont Station Plaza, said the momentum has grown each year.

“We’ve expanded the number of vendors and our publicity has gotten better. We have added activities, we have music as much as possible to add some liveliness,” she said. “We are adding a seating area so people can sit around and chat.
