JFK Library Foundation CEO Heather Campion resigns

After less than two years of leading the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation, CEO Heather Campion has resigned from her post and will be stepping down, according to a foundation statement released Wednesday afternoon.

Campion, a banker and former White House staffer, was the fifth executive to lead the foundation, which works with federal archive officials in running the JFK Library. The first female foundation executive, Campion had served on the foundation board since 2003 and took command in March 2014.

“I accepted this position, knowing that it would be a challenge, and one which I was honored to undertake,” Campion wrote in a letter to the Board of Directors included in a press release. “I am grateful to have had the opportunity to lead the JFK Library Foundation at such an important time, and look forward to the continued progress and success of this very special institution.”

Campion was brought on as CEO to create innovative initiatives and bring in new audiences in accordance with the Board’s agenda. She replaced outgoing president Tom McNaught.

Campion’s tumultuous tenure coincided with a stream of departing library staff, as reported in the Boston Globe. In September, Thomas Putnam resigned as JFK Library director, as post he had held since 2007.

According to the Boston Globe, the executive’s resignation came after reports commissioned in September to review her performance were delivered to the board.

She will take on a consulting role Harvard’s Institute of Politics focused on women’s leadership, according to the statement. An interim leadership team will oversee foundation efforts while the search for Campion’s replacement is underway.

In a joint statement, Honorary Library President Caroline Kennedy and Board Member Ed Schlossberg said: “Heather has worked with her team tirelessly to implement the Board’s new agenda and has launched a range of new initiatives. We are saddened by her departure but are committed to moving forward on the successful course that the Foundation and the Library has set.”
