Ashmont Hill Chamber Music concert set for Sun., Sept. 18

Through the generosity of the Free For All Concert Fund, Ashmont Hill Chamber Music will be presenting Yo Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble members Mike Block, cello and tabla player Sandeep Das in a concert on September 18, at 3p.m. in Peabody Hall of All Saints Church, 209 Ashmont Street, Dorchester. The concert is free and open to the public. Children are particularly welcome.

First brought together by Yo-Yo Ma in his Silk Road Ensemble, Sandeep Das and Mike Block are two virtuosic musicians adept at bringing contemporary approaches to traditional music styles, fusing Das’ Indian style with Block’s American style.

Sandeep Das grew up in India as a tabla prodigy, under the tutelage of his guru, Pt. Kishanji Maharaj. Sandeep first performed with the famous Pt. Ravi Shankar when he was 15, and has been a three-time Grammy nominee. Sandeep recently moved with his family to Boston from New Delhi.

Hailed by Yo Yo Ma as the “ideal musician of the 21st Century”, Mike Block is a pioneering multi-style cellist, composer, and educator living in Boston, acclaimed by the NY Times for his “vital rich-hued solo playing”. While still studying at the Juilliard School, Mike joined Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble, and shortly thereafter also joined Mark O’Connor’s Appalachia Waltz Trio.
