Ashmont Hill to team up with Project STEP, Harlem String Quartet

On Feb. 6, Ashmont Hill Chamber Music will announce a partnership with Project STEP with a concert and masterclass by the Grammy Award winning Harlem String Quartet. The weekend residency is sponsored by Trinity Financial, which has a long history of supporting the arts in the Dorchester community. AHCM sees the weekend as the beginning of a long and very fruitful collaboration between the two organizations.

Since 1980, Project STEP has been involved in identifying musically talented children from underrepresented Boston communities and providing them with comprehensive music and string instrument instruction.

“Project STEP’s mission dovetails perfectly with that of Ashmont Hill Chamber Music, which has always been committed to fostering a diverse audience of all ages for chamber music of the highest caliber,” said Mary Beth Alger, artistic director of AHCM. Alger said Trinity Financial’s support made this inaugural collaboration possible.

Harlem Quartet is renowned for advancing diversity in classical music while engaging new audiences with varied repertoire that includes works by composers of color. Their mission to share their passion with a wider audience has taken them around the world; from a 2009 performance at The White House for President Obama and the First Lady, Michelle Obama, to a highly successful tour of South Africa in 2012, and numerous venues in between. The musically versatile ensemble has performed with such distinguished performers as Itzhak Perlman, Ida Kavafian, Carter Brey, Fred Sherry, Misha Dicter, Jeremy Denk, and Paquito D’Rivera. Their most recent recording, Hot House, with jazz master Chick Corea and percussionist Gary Burton was a 2013 multi-Grammy Award winner.

The concert is at 4 pm on February 6, at Peabody Hall of All Saints’ Church and is open to the public. Earlier in the day, Project STEP students will participate in a masterclass given by Harlem String Quartet.
