Bird Street teens set up shop at Faneuil Hall Marketplace

Bird Street Community Center, a Dorchester-based non-profit, has partnered with Faneuil Hall Marketplace to operate two new pushcarts to sell what they’re best known for making: one-of-a -ind handmade blown and stain glass pieces.

The non-profit’s glass blowing program is offered to children and young adults who have honed in on their skills manipulating molten glass each year to create a wide variety of beautiful pieces of art, like jewelry, paperweights, vases, and more. The new pushcarts opened on Mon., July 11, giving the center’s children and young adults the opportunity to master a new skill—marketing and retail.

“It’s going great so far,” said Kevin O’Rourke, executive director of Bird Street. “They’re learning more about the world by meeting so many different people at the marketplace. We didn’t have time to rehearse sales pitches and we didn’t even need to. They’re already great at it.”

Bird Street partnered with Faneuil Hall by chance.

“I was stuck in traffic one morning and I was thinking about the inventory from the most recent glass blowing class. We usually make sales during the holidays at craft fairs so I called Faneuil Hall just to see what they would charge to rent a cart there to unload some of our inventory. They jumped all over it when I told them what we do and what programs we offer at Bird Street so we got together to meet within two days,” said O’Rourke, and the rest is history.

Bird Street’s new and unique pushcarts—a perfect fit for Faneuil Hall—are operated by youth members and faculty of the non-profit just in time for the marketplace’s new and interactive outdoor programming designed for all ages alongside Boston’s overall shopping and dining experience.

The Bird Street pushcarts will be open Sunday through Saturday from 10-6 p.m., and anticipate continuing operation right through the Fall. 100 percent of the proceeds goes back to programming for the Bird Street Community Center.
