Bond, McCarthy arraigned, held for Baby Bella murder

Both suspects in the murder and disposal of Bella Bond, known for months as Baby Doe, were arraigned on Jan. 6 and are being held pending trial, according to the Suffolk District Attorney's office.

Rachelle Bond, 40, of Dorchester, and Michael McCarthy, 35, of Quincy, are charged in connection with the death of two-year-old Bella, whose remains were found washed up in a trash bag on a Deer Island shore last June.

Prosecutors have said Bond and McCarthy, her live-in boyfriend, were in Bond’s Maxwell Street apartment in late May or early June, and Bond’s daughter Bella was acting “unruly.” McCarthy allegedly went upstairs to calm her, prosecutors said, and Bond was on her way up to see what had happened when the noise suddenly ceased.

According to Assistant District Attorney David Deakin, Bond found McCarthy kneeling over Bella’s prone body. The toddler’s head was swollen, and Bond, said Deakin, knew she was dead.

McCarthy allegedly put Bella’s dead body into a trash bag, and the two adults embarked on a “drug binge” for several days. They then reportedly added weights from McCarthy’s father’s plumbing shop to the bag and tossed it into a distant spot in Boston Harbor.

At the arraignment, Bond pleaded not guilty to charges of being an accessory to murder and of larceny. The larceny pertains to Bond accepting about $1,400 in welfare benefits intended for Bella after the her death. Bond is being held on $1 million cash bail.

Bond’s defense asserts that Bond was controlled by McCarthy, who was providing her with drugs. His lawyer contested that narrative days later at McCarthy’s arraignment, portraying McCarthy as a mild-mannered person who was duped by Bond into thinking that Bella was in the custody of the Department of Children and Families.

McCarthy has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder. Clerk Magistrate Edward Curley ordered him held without bail.
