The latest addition to the Fields Corner business district plans to open its doors next month. The home.stead bakery and café, located at 1448 Dorchester Ave., plans to provide a unique space for gourmet dining and live entertainment, according to co-founder Jack Wu.

“We are going to be a café where we will offer breakfast and lunch during our normal daily hours, between 6:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.,” Wu said. “And we focus on gourmet coffee, tea, as well as baked goods made from scratch.”

Wu, a Dorchester resident, is joined by his leadership team of Vivian and Elisa Girard, who are also neighborhood residents.

Some items available to customers include a breakfast quiche, paninis, and salads. On weekends, however, the home.stead will go through a unique transformation. The establishment just secured city approval for a liquor license, which they will serve during dinner hours and live entertainment.

“On weekends we’re going to introduce different things such as pop-up dinners to celebrate the diversity of Dorchester,” Wu said. “We’re going to do live entertainment, such as stand-up comedy, improv comedy, poetry slams, art shows, things along those lines.”

Wu says he and his partners decided to create the home.stead in order to provide locals with a place to communicate and socialize outside of their homes.

“The whole philosophy about a café is to make it become an extension of everybody’s living room, where people feel comfortable just gathering and enjoying each other’s company over beverages and food,” said Wu.

The location was viewed as the best starting point for Wu and the Girard’s, because according to Wu, Fields Corner is lacking the go-to local café that many other spots in Dorchester already have.

The home.stead’s leadership team has not announced an exact opening day, but Wu says they are planning to have everything completed by February.

“At the present time we’re calibrating the equipment and we’ve hired most of the staff,” Wu said. “Barring no surprises from final inspections […] we hope to open in three weeks.”

One thing that still awaits completion is the pricing of the menu items. Wu says they are working to make the prices reasonable for customers.

“We’re trying to shoot for a small cup of good coffee for under $2.00, and the sandwich will be around benchmark, around seven-fifty for a panini, and there are things that will fall in between,” Wu said.

Wu says his team is both excited and nervous as the opening day approaches.

“We hope it will bring a positive impact,” Wu said. “We hope to be the addition in terms of both the selection of food and drinks as well as the ambiance that’s slightly different than what’s currently provided.”

Wu believes the home.stead café has two qualities that will separate it from local businesses in the area.

“Number one, the bulk of our menu items as well as the gourmet coffee is not really available particularly in the immediate vicinity to where we are,” he said. “Number two, the ambiance of our café is not the same as any other food establishment in the neighborhood where we are.”
