Dream comes true for Dot’s Kieran Jordan: Her very own dance studio in Cleary Square

The award-winning Irish dancer and Dorchester resident Kieran Jordan has a new title to add to her name: Business Owner. Jordan, who makes her home in Lower Mills with her husband, the artist Vincent Crotty, has opened a dance studio in Hyde Park’s Cleary Square. “It’s four miles down River Street from my house to the studio,” she notes happily.

Jordan, who gears her instruction toward adults of varying degrees of experience, says that this venture is the culmination of years spent searching for the right space. Pointing to the strong art community in the square, she said she believes her classes will attract a dedicated following from both Hyde Park and nearby neighborhoods, for both personal instruction and small group classes.

Jordan laughs when asked how she feels about teaching a class to those who have zero dance background but profess a love of Irish dance: “So many of my students tell me they have two left feet, but this is who I teach: adults who want to learn. Together, we learn, starting with the fundamentals.”

Jordan currently teaches adults exclusively, but doesn’t discount the idea of adding kids’ classes somewhere down the line.

Her students range from complete novices to advanced dancers. Beginner classes in Traditional Step feature the fundamentals of Irish music rhythms and gradually add footwork and choreography. Jordan will also offer a Sean-Nos class, described on her website, kieranjordan.com, as “an improvised solo style, which includes footwork danced close-to-the-floor, a relaxed upper body, and a playful dialogue between the dance and the music.”

Now that she controls her own dance space, Jordan says she can be creative with her class schedule, offering a lunchtime class for students seeking a mid-day workout or for those who might have difficulty dancing on weeknights or weekends. Her Floor and Core class will combine conditioning, meditation, and yoga, and will be set to Irish music.

The Kieran Jordan Dance Studio is located at 1310 Hyde Park Ave., right across from the Commuter Rail MBTA station. There is free street parking nearby. Look for the sign outside her front door, lovingly hand-painted by her husband, who trained professionally as a sign painter in his home country of Ireland before branching out into the beautiful local landscape paintings he is so well known for.
