Sheriff Steve Tompkins is throwing his support behind Leonard Lee for District 4 city council.

Lee is one of nine men and women seeking to replace Andrea Campbell in the district seat, which includes parts of Dorchester and Mattapan.

"I am endorsing Leonard to represent Boston City Council's District 4 because I know firsthand the great passion and dedication that he has to serve the stakeholders living, working and learning in the neighborhoods of the district," Tompkins said of Lee in a statement issued Sept. 8.

"With a body of work that includes advocacy for equitable health care for all, violence prevention and public safety, racial equality and human rights, the creation and preservation of green spaces, and more, Leonard's track record of service speaks to the kind of leadership that I believe he will bring to District 4 and beyond."

Tompkins has also backed City Councillor Michelle Wu in her campaign for mayor of Boston.

Lee's campaign said it plans to open a campaign headquarters on Sept. 9 at 1102 Blue Hill Ave. in Dorchester. The preliminary election for city council and mayor is on Tuesday, Sept. 14.
