City Hall officials have placed an employee who worked in a violence prevention program on unpaid leave after learning he was arrested on Sunday. The worker allegedly led Boston police on a chase through Mattapan, and allegedly had two loaded firearms in his vehicle.

Police identified the man as Calvin Dedrick, 53, originally of Dorchester’s Four Corners area, who has worked as an employee of the Street Outreach, Advocacy and Response (SOAR) program. The program is reportedly in turmoil and to be in the process of being phased out – pending negotiations with the group’s union, SEIU 888.

He was arraigned in Dorchester District Court on Tuesday and a judge ordered him held without bail, pending a Feb. 24 dangerousness hearing.

City officials said on Wednesday Dedrick was placed on unpaid leave after the arrest and allegations surfaced Monday.

"The City was made aware of these allegations over the weekend. Mr. Dedrick has been placed on unpaid leave while the court process proceeds or until further information becomes available,” said a city spokesperson.

The alleged incident took place on Sunday, Feb. 19, at around 8:30 a.m. when officers arrested Dedrick as he walked into Mattapan Square.

According to a Boston Police report, earlier in the morning officers responded to the area of River Street for a call for a person with a gun. While officers approached the area, they received word of the suspect in a fleeing motor vehicle, and they observed a suspect who matched the description.

Police tried to pull over the vehicle, which was allegedly driven by Dedrick, and activated their emergency lights. However, the vehicle refused to stop for them, and they lost sight of it.

After canvassing the area, they did locate the suspect’s vehicle around 14 Blue Hills Parkway, Milton.

The report said they later found Dedrick, who matched the description of the suspect, walking near Mattapan Square. He was arrested without incident.

A search of his parked car allegedly revealed two firearms inside that were identified as a SCCY CPX-2 with 10 rounds in the magazine, and a Jimenez Arms JA-9 with eight rounds in the magazine.

Police said Dedrick was placed under arrest and charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and failure to stop for a police officer.

The popular SOAR program is under the purview of the Boston Center for Youth and Families (BCYF).

In public forums on violence prevention, several community members from Dorchester and Mattapan asked city officials to sort out the issues with SOAR and reinstitute the program.

At that time late last year, it was indicated that the program was being reconfigured and was in the middle of union negotiations.
