Dot, Mattapan baseball duo led Northern Essex CC in national championship play

A Dorchester and Mattapan duo helped power the Northern Essex Community College (NECC) baseball team to an appearance in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) World Series last month and a third-place finish nationwide.

Anthony Marcano, a sophomore from in Mattapan, was named a First Team NJCAA All-America last month. An infielder, Marcano was named to the World Series All-Tournament team and was one of the national leaders in on-base percentage (0.637) and batting average (.482), with 30 of the 55 hits on the season being for extra bases. He also logged 13 home runs on the season, with two of them being game winning homers during World Series play.

Sophomore Richard Matos, from Grove Hall, earned third team All-America honors for the year. The first baseman a .394 batting average and finished seventh in the nation with 73 RBIs. He recorded 11 home runs on the year, and 24 extra-base hits.

NECC, located in Haverhill, finished the season with a 38-8 overall record and a third-place finish at the NJCAA World Series in their ninth all-time appearance on the national stage.
