The West of Washington Coalition (WOW) held its annual BBQ Block Party on Aug. 16 on closed-down Norwell Street and on the vacant lot next to the MBTA Talbot Station with about 300 taking part over the day.

WOW leaders, led by co-Presidents Indy Robinson and Sarah Riddle, organized a BBQ, music, a visit from Boston Fire Engine 52, a food truck from Murl’s Kitchen, line dancing, the first annual Mac and Cheese Cook-off, and traditional games.

An old-fashioned footrace was a highlight of the day with children and teens facing off against B-3 Officer Haminton Balthazar. The finish was close, but Balthazar claimed victory.

The vacant lot was recently transferred to the Boston Parks and Recreation Department, and the long-awaited Norwell Park project is expected to get back on track soon, with a hope of breaking ground next spring on the multi-million dollar developmenr.
