Cabo Verde vs. Uruguay game is highlight feature
World Cup soccer and Father’s Day fun will come together at a day-long free event at the former Dorchester Tire property on Dot Ave. in Savin Hill on Sun., June 21 from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m.
The event, called Dorchester Watchfest, is sponsored by Fields Corner Main Streets, the City of Boston and Sunday Fundays, along with a host of community organizations including the ADSL, Boys and Girls Clubs of Dorchester, Pleasant Street Entertainment, and Uphams Corner Main Street.
The location, at 1160 Dorchester Ave., will feature three large LEED screens showing the three games scheduled for that afternoon: Spain vs. Saudi Aradia at noon; Iran vs. Belgium at 3 p.m.; and Cabo Verde vs. Uruguay at 6 p.m.
The event is licensed for viewing the games, but there will be beer and other drinks for sale on site. Food trucks and catering will also be available for purchase, including Cesaria Restaurant, Lisboa Café, Frios Gourmet Pops, an ice cream truck, and a working grill.
The event will feature a DJ at 4:30 p.m. and a speaking program at 4:45. At 5:30, Cape Verdean music will be highlighted while traditional music/dances like the accordion-heavy Funaná style are featured.
The focus will be on the Cabo Verde game at 6 p.m. in support of the large Cape Verdean community in the neighborhood.

Jackey West Devine, director of Fields Corner Main Streets, said she and the partners began conceiving the idea last fall.
“We saw the joy at Cesaria Restaurant when they qualified and it was a call to action for us,” she said. “We knew Cesaria wasn’t going to be big enough to hold everyone who wanted to watch, and we decided we needed a plan to celebrate Cabo Verde with the community and all of Dorchester.”
Organizers are shooting to bring in temporary sod grass to put over the asphalt for participants to relax on during the games – though chairs are welcome. Participants are also welcome to bring their own food or picnic lunch.
“Ideally it’s going to be a family-friendly, all day event,” said West Devine.
The music will end at 6 p.m. for the coin toss and the start of the Cabo Verde vs. Uruguay soccer match. The event will conclude at the end of the game.
