Former Mayor and US Labor Secretary Martin J. Walsh was honored with an award named for one of his longtime friends and advisors, Danny “Budzo” Ryan, a former Dorchester resident who died last year.
The “Light Bearer” award was presented at a recent event to support the Maura Wilkins Foundation, which helps people on their journey to recovery from alcohol and substance use disorders. Co-Chaired by Tom and Tricia O’Brien, the event brought together more than 300 supporters and community leaders to celebrate Marty’s legacy and raise critical funds for the foundation’s mission.
“Marty truly embodies the spirit of service and resilience this award honors,” said PJ Preskenis, who leads the foundation’s board. “His unwavering dedication inspires all of us to lift each other up and make a meaningful impact, especially for those on the path to recovery.”
Walsh, a Dorchester resident who is now president of the NHL Players’ Association, was recognized for his relentless advocacy to help other men and women enter recovery and get sober.
“Danny’s legacy and the Foundation’s work remind us to support those in need and to strengthen our community,” Walsh said in a statement. I am grateful for this recognition.”
“Budzo” Ryan was a legendary political operative in Savin Hill, where he spent most of his life. A retired court officer, Ryan was committed to helping others who were seeking recovery and sobriety. He died in May 2025 at age 81 after a brief illness.
