The Boston Licensing Board on Thursday approved plans by Frank Delaney and Teresa Murphy to replace the short-lived Scobie’s, 782 Adams St. in Dorchester, with the Session House, which will feature Irish pub grub accompanied by Irish seisiún music – much of it by local musicians.
“We’re really interested in having like a family-friendly restaurant that you can bring kids to see, you know, live music,” Murphy said. “We’ll have traditional Irish music and some contemporary as well.”
“It’s basically what the Burren does in Somerville,” Delaney said. “Where there could be one to five, ten musicians, but one general microphone in the middle to pick up. … But it’s very civilized.
“We’re not talking about DJs and big bands, etc, etc. I grew up in this area. I know I’m from Ireland, but I say I grew up in this area because my first apartment was on Adam Street. And my children went to St. Brendan’s, and my grandchildren go there now. So I’m very involved. I know the community very well, and I’ve been around a long time.”
Speaking to board Chairwoman Kathleen Joyce, who lives nearby, he added: “‘I’m sure living in the area you’re aware of how many musicians, Irish musicians live in this area, and how many musicians have reached out to us looking to to play here?”
In addition to the licensing board, which approved a 1 a.m. closing time, Session House will need approval from the city entertainment licensing division – which Joyce also chairs – for the music.
