Remember back in August 2025 when Donald Trump was going to get tough with Vladimir Putin? Remember the “severe consequences” he promised if Russia’s dictator didn’t stop bombing Ukrainian cities and slaughtering civilians?
How’s that working out?
Fourteen months after Trump chumped out on an Alaskan airbase, the Russian strongman is still raining missiles on Ukrainian families with increasingly deadly results. And Trump? He’s lying prostrate before the Kremlin, begging to buy Russian diesel fuel while threatening to punish the Ukrainians for having the temerity to fight back.
On Friday, Trump announced what he called a “highly successful discussion” with Putin that will allow Russia to sell millions of tons of its diesel fuel, thanks to a suspension of American sanctions imposed after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This comes less than a month after Congress passed new legislation — championed by the late US Sen. Lindsay Graham— that authorizes the president to sanction countries that do exactly what Trump just said he was going to do: Buy oil from Russia.
Meanwhile, the deal he outlined would deliver billions in desperately needed revenue to Putin’s war machine, undermining a shared US-European strategy that has kept Ukraine in the fight for the last four years.
And what will the United States get in return— other than the diesel? Nada. No concessions. No ceasefire.
Instead, Trump is now demanding that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stop attacking Russian oil refineries, a crucial component of Kyiv’s effort to cripple the Russian economy and its capacity to wage war.
When Zelenskyy objected to the “deal,” Trump suggested that Ukraine should find itself a new president. Imagine that. The man who invaded a sovereign nation, killing many thousands and displacing millions, gets an economic lifeline. The man defending his country gets threatened by his supposed ally.
The New York Times reported that Trump’s emissaries, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, delivered their demands to Ukrainian and European officials at a Florida golf club last week. When the Ukrainians asked what they would get in exchange for suspending attacks on Russian refineries, the Americans reportedly offered precisely nothing.
When reporters on Monday confronted Trump about his alleged “ceasefire deal”— noting that both Russia and Ukraine deny they’ve agreed to any such truce— our delusional chump-in-chief revealed that the deal was one of his own imagination.
“They agreed. You know why? Because I said, ‘You agree’ — that’s why. They agreed because I said they agreed, and that thing has to get settled.”
The absurdity of all this is compounded by the fact that Trump’s own war against Iran has helped send global fuel prices soaring. Now, with Americans paying dearly at the pump and midterm elections looming, he’s looking to Putin to save his ass.
This is the same president who struts around boasting about American military supremacy, renames government departments to sound more warlike, and threatens to deploy troops against American cities. But put him across the negotiating table from an actual dictator and suddenly, once again, he goes into chump mode.
Trump’s enablers — including fellow chump Marco Rubio— call this diplomacy. But from this vantage point, it looks more a weak, lame duck, wannabe strongman who is desperate to shore up his poll numbers before a mid-term thumping. It’s shameful.
Trump, the chump, has been played once again. Shame on us if we elect a Congress that lets him get away with it.
