A creative art brand and gallery experience rooted in raw originality, bold expression, and urban influence has found its home on the corner of Dot Ave and Howes Street.
Indigo Infrared, a new storefront gallery space at 969 Dorchester Ave., is owned by Romard Myers, a 31-year-old Roxbury native who has contributed to a range of curated exhibitions and underground showcases since 2018.
Myers launched his business while operating a gallery “for a few years” on Washington Street called the Afro Caribbean Museum. “We left there and went to Everett,” he said. “We assisted in running a music studio in Everett, so we kind of had a gallery and music studio.
“Once we left there due to Covid, we kind of fell short of finding another place, so we waited years until we found our new spot, which is this one right here.”
Located next to Thùy-An Insurance, the space includes original works by Myers and other local artists. The July residencies include JB183, Carter P, and PJ.
“I want to bring color here. I’ve noticed on this strip that there’s not much really going on when it comes to art,” he said. “I wanted to do something where kids and adults can come in, hang out, enjoy themselves, buy things as well, and get to experience the culture that I have been manifesting.”
Myers, who now lives in Fields Corner with his wife, Nova, and their three kids, hopes to recreate some of the eclectic spaces he frequented as a kid and teen.
It’s “primarily a gallery, but, he adds: “It’s kind of confusing when you see it at first, but once you get in here, you kind of get to know the gist that we’re doing, and it’s very nostalgic. Most people within my age range come in here and are like, ‘Wow, this is a place I would like to stay and hang out.’”
The store also features snacks, beverages, and merch sold through Indigo-Dega, a bodega-inspired shop, with candy, chips, and soda. Guests can also purchase the showcased artwork, accessories, and a selection of thrifted clothing items.
As the summer continues, Myers is looking for creative ways to engage the community.
Elevated Expressions: Paint N Vibe, a guided paint experience, is set for this Saturday (July 25), while Spaced Out: A Cosmic Journey, a 21+ evening event, will take place on Aug. 28.
