A favorite Dorchester Halloween tradition returns this Thursday evening (Oct. 29) when the annual Pumpkin Parade takes over Pope John Paul II Park for a free, family-friendly celebration along the Neponset River Greenway.

The festivities will run from 5:30 to 7 p.m., with families gathering at the park’s Hallett Street entrance for an evening of costumes, games, crafts, music and plenty of Halloween treats.

Organized by the Neponset River Greenway Council, the state Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), and the Neponset River Watershed Association (NepRWA), the annual event offers a fun, decidedly non-scary way for children and their families to celebrate Halloween in one of Dorchester’s most scenic waterfront parks.

The highlight of the evening will be a costume parade along the park’s paved trails, led by oversized pumpkins. Young participants will collect candy and surprises along the route before gathering for dancing to Halloween-themed music provided by a DJ.

The celebration will also feature Halloween games, arts and crafts, photo opportunities and cider.

Organizers are encouraging children and adults to arrive in their favorite Halloween costumes. Families are also invited to bring decorated or carved pumpkins, with special treats available for participants. Candles will be provided for pumpkins.

The event has become a seasonal favorite along the Neponset Greenway, bringing together neighborhood families for an outdoor celebration just days before Halloween.

There is no admission charge, and advance registration is not required.

In the event of rain, the parade will be held Friday, Oct. 30, from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
