A 39-year-old Dorchester man was arrested Wednesday night and charged with manslaughter in connection with a February assault on Dorchester Avenue that resulted in the death of a 66-year-old man, Boston Police said.

Jason Jones was taken into custody by homicide detectives around 8:36 p.m. on Oct. 28 near 1900 Dorchester Ave. on a warrant issued earlier that day by Dorchester District Court.

Police allege that Jones punched Stephen Barrett, 66, of Dorchester, during an encounter outside 1931 Dorchester Ave. on Feb. 10, causing Barrett to fall backward and strike his head on the pavement.

Officers responding to a report of an unconscious man around 8:41 p.m. found Barrett unresponsive as Boston firefighters performed CPR. He was transported to a hospital by Boston EMS but died from his injuries on Feb. 17, one week after the assault.

Following an eight-month investigation, police identified Jones as the suspect and obtained an arrest warrant.

Jones faces charges of manslaughter and assault and battery on a person age 60 or older or disabled. He was expected to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court.

Police said the investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact homicide detectives at 617-343-4470 or anonymously through CrimeStoppers at 1-800-494-TIPS.
