Woman shot, killed while walking on Washington Street

A 36-year-old mother walking along Washington Street was shot and killed on Saturday afternoon in a broad daylight incident that also left a teenager wounded. Benine Andre was fatally shot just before 2:30 p.m. as she walked to work in the vicinity of Four Corners. The teen victim, a male, was expected to survive his injuries.

Carmelle Bonhometre, who works with the Association of Haitian Women in Boston (AFAB), said that Andre arrived in Boston from her native Haiti just three months ago. Her husband, Timothe Andre, has been in the United States for about a decade and attends English as a Second Language courses at AFAB’s offices on Fuller Street.

“Benine came from Haiti with two of their children, one 12 and one 13. She was on her way to work as a home health aide when she was hit by the bullet,” said Bonhometre.

AFAB has launched an online fundraising campaign to seek donations to help pay for the funeral.
“In the midst of transitioning to a new country and what would hope to be a better life, the family is completely devastated by this senseless act of violence,” reads a statement on the GoFundMe page.

“Benine’s husband works two low-paying jobs in order to support the family, but they are still struggling to pay all of their expenses.  Paying for a funeral and burial is beyond their reach.  The family would be most grateful for anything you are willing to give.”

The shooting, which took place in broad daylight on one of the neighborhood’s busiest streets, angered Boston Police Commissioner William Evans.

“It’s sad. Look around here. Look how many young kids. It kills you to see these young kids, you can see the fear on their faces,” Evans told WBZ-TV near the scene of the shooting at the intersection of Morse Street. “They shouldn’t have to be witnesses to this.”

Boston Police urged anyone with information about the shooting to contact detectives at 617-343-4470. Or call in tips anonymously to 1-800-494-TIPS.
