Meeting at Lower Mills library set for Oct. 25; ‘Working session’ on key issues

Boston Public Library officials are making another foray into the Lowers Mills neighborhood, where a branch library is slated to close. A “working session” is scheduled for Oct. 25 at 6:30 p.m. at the Richmond St. library. The meeting is billed as a discussion of which library services are most important to the community.

Officials halted the closing process earlier this year, soon after they clashed with neighborhood activists opposed to the Lower Mills shut-down at a meeting at Carney Hospital. The Lower Mills branch is one of four that BPL officials and Mayor Menino agreed should close. The others include the Faneuil Branch in Brighton, the Washington Village Branch in South Boston and the Orient Heights Branch in East Boston. The libraries were granted a reprieve in June, with city officials agreeing to hold off on closures until the spring. Separately, library officials are planning “strategic planning sessions” as part of a new “vision” for the entire system, with one set for the Grove Hall branch on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 11 a.m. A planning session is also planned for online at bpl.org on Wednesday, Nov. 3 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., and at five locations across the city.
