Members of the Leary family presented a $10,000 check to Dorchester Youth Hockey (DYH) leaders at Devine Rink on Dec. 15 that represented the proceeds from the Oct. 3 Bill ‘Biff’ Leary Memorial Golf Tournament.
The event took place at George Wright Golf Course in Hyde Park, and was hosted by the Leary family to help support the late “Biff”s favorite organization, DYH – where he and his sons played as kids.
Leary, who passed away in 2024, grew up in Neponset and played in the Neponset (now Dorchester) Hockey League as a child with his three brothers, Jerry, Danny, and Gerald (Judgy). As an adult, he also coached his sons, Billy and Conor, and numerous nephews and neighborhood kids.
“He was a fierce competitor and made most of his childhood friends playing hockey,” said Danny Leary. “He carried that love of youth hockey into fatherhood and became very involved in DYH. He was extremely proud of the program; he had the pleasure of coaching his sons and nephews who also developed great friendships because of DYH.
“I think for all of the Learys this will always be what we remember: it’s not always about wins and loses but it’s about the friends you made along the way,” continued Danny.
DYH’s Shaun O’Sullivan said Leary spent countless hours at Devine Rink volunteering, coaching, and serving over many years on the DYH Board of Directors while his boys, nieces, and nephews played hockey in the program.
“Biff” served our program and the community proudly, mentoring neighborhood kids with hard work, discipline, teamwork, competition and fun, and being a true friend to all us,” said O’Sullivan.
“DYH appreciates the generous gift, and it further cements the Leary Legacy of supporting the youth of Dorchester and our future leaders.”
